Cheddar Valley
RC: What are your plans for the rest
of 2019?
NH: On the pitch, we hope to
continue to grow depth within
all of our sections, focussing on
developing opportunities for those
new to or returning to the game. Off
the pitch we aim to adopt a more
professional approach to governance
and financial management so we
are well placed to run a new social
facility we aim to build next season.
RC: How important is youth rugby
to the club?
NH: Youth rugby is hugely
important, not just because it is great
for those involved but also represents
a key part of the club. As with most
small village clubs, we struggle to
retain players against ‘temptation’
of other activities and work closely
with other clubs to ensure as many
as possible continue to be involved
in the game. We aspire to regrow our
Colts section and are very focussed
on working with local schools to
develop other teams, both boys and
girls.
RC: How does the club ensure
that young players enjoy a smooth
transition into the senior game?
NH: We sadly lost our Colts team
two seasons ago and now work with
a local club to provide opportunities
for young players but keep in close
contact with them and support
through coaching so they know
where their home is. We also have a
very welcoming 2nd XV and actively
encourage those young players who
are eligible, to play.
RC: Would you consider yours to
be a community club?
NH: Very definitely – we pride
ourselves on being a community
rugby club. We work closely with
other sports clubs and organisations
