Llandudno
Dave Davies grew up playing rugby on a nearby field with
his brother John and the likes of next door neighbours and
current Chairman Robbie Shields. As well as his strong family
connections with Llandudno Rugby Club as ex-player, captain
and coach he is also the father of ex RGC Skipper and back row
genius Kelvin Davies. He recently told Rugby Club Magazine,
“I attended most of Llandudno’s games last season and was
really impressed by how quickly the skill and aptitude of this
essentially young side, came together. Kelvin has made a big
impact as player coach with my nephew Day Day stepping in as
club captain and with a great team of coaches and players this
has helped attract a few new players who were keen to be part
of the new vibrant setup.
The mood, discipline and of course fitness saw the team
benefit in the 2nd half of many encounters and over the course
of the season this helped increase their lead eventually finishing
as Division 1 North Champions in style!
My own rugby career started as a 12-year-old with the
`Llandudno Grasshopper’ with myself and many of my team
mates coming through the John Bright School of the day and
progressing into senior rugby. I managed to play 1st team
rugby, in either hooker or flanker positions, and remain virtually
injury free up until the age of 42, motivated by the desire to play
in the same team as my sons.
I have to say I may not have felt the knocks so much back
then but can tell you about them these days! The Davies family
have had a long association with the club with my brothers
Jason, John and many of my nephews still involved. John is
currently one of the first XV coaches with his sons, and my
nephews, Cameron, Alan, Bob and Byron still playing and I’m
sure our next generation will follow suit in years to come.
