Rugby Club Magazine recently caught up with their Honorary Secretary Phil Lewin to find out more about how the club has been getting along lately. RC: How long have you been involved and what first attracted you to the club? PL: I’ve been involved since Day One. I was a founder member of the club along with a group of friends back in 2006. There was a “gap in the market” for another rugby club in the local area and we capitalised on it, flourishing into the set-up we have today. RC: What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your role? PL: As I’m sure is the case with most people, the challenging part is finding the time to run a rugby club in between balancing work and family life! Somehow we all find a way though. The most rewarding part definitely has to be seeing the many new friendships flourish between people from all walks of life who would never normally have had the opportunity to meet each other, but when we come together as one rugby family it definitely provides a huge sense of achievement. 34 Issue 87 RC: How’s the general mood down at the club at the moment? PL: The mood is incredibly positive. Our men’s team secured promotion to Midlands 3 last season and our Ladies finished in a respectable 4th place in their first ever season of competitive league rugby. Everyone is massively looking forward to seeing what new challenges the 2019/20 season will bring. It’s been a really great year for us at STRFC! Apart from success on the field we’re also looking to expand our facilities and have attracted a lot of new players, especially to Women’s rugby. RC: What are your plans for 2019? PL: We plan to continue to grow the club in terms of membership (players and social) and expand our facilities offering by hopefully having a second pitch available at some point in the season. At the moment we’re a single-pitch club
