Weybridge Vandals with England U16s and Wales U20s, respectively. Second row Ayling, whose father Chris still turns out for the club’s Owls vets team, is currently contracted with Welsh Pro 14 side the Dragons. Vandals’ U21 development squad captain Luke Dones also appeared for Surrey U20s in their Jason Leonard Cup final clash with Berkshire in May, while first team captain Adam Bullet is a product of the club’s junior section. And Sewell admits seeing the progress of the club’s youth ranks into the senior squad and beyond is one of the more rewarding aspects of his position as chairman. “Youth rugby is essential to the success of Vandals as a community club,” he added. “The growth and success of the minis and juniors through to Colts and U21s is the lifeblood of our senior section. We have a very clearly defined player pathway, which develops all players at the best pace for the individual. “This programme also ensures that players that wish to attain higher honours are provided the opportunity and support. We also work with local schools to bring rugby to them when they may not otherwise get the chance and we also make our facilities available.” Increasing financial costs and finding volunteers to help run the club, which also has successful cricket and netball sections, are a constant challenge. But Sewell, with the help of long-term club sponsors Nine Group, hopes the club can continue to grow in tricky times. “Running costs are increasing and revenues are at best staying the same,” he added. “We are fortunate to be supported every year by Nine Group, but we do need additional sponsorship to supplement the membership fees. “We have an outstanding set of pitches in an awesome location and over the next five years we would love to develop and modernise our facility to provide a first- class sporting venue.” “Thirty years ago I moved to the area and after seeing the club whilst wandering to the pub went along to try it out. When I walked through the doors I knew I was home and started playing thirty years ago. The team has been galvanized in recent timers and has a great spirit now and is all about enjoyment. I’ve sponsored the club for a couple of years now and my three sons have all played for the club as well while my wife Kate is also heavily involved. This season will be tough but if we can stay in the league the colts coming through will be able to help push us on from there.” Stuart Gulliver www.rugbyclubmag.com 33
