Ashford FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG “I have played for the club since the age of four, introduced to Ashford by my dad Nigel who was a useful Fullback in his day, renowned for his running and a good boot, who came to the sport late at age 30. My main playing position was fly half or centre. I played to the age of 25 when, at the end of my second ACL reconstruction, I had to call it a day. I did continue coaching the U16s and senior squad at times and these days I am still involved but in a more relaxed way. Next season I feel the guys should aim for promotion again which as a club fan and member would be a wonderful achievement. My business Talent Digital are also a club sponsor and I like to help out. Best wishes to all my friends at Ashford for many seasons to come.” Lloyd Stokes David Burdon is a joint sponsor of Ashford RFC and a club Vice President he recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “I moved to the area many moons ago and like many other local people joined the local rugby club. I was already a rugby player, usually no 8, so as my son Grant, who is now a 28-year-old winger for the 1st XV, started with the club’s mini section and the U7s I naturally deepened my involvement. Ashford is a new town and therefore many people don’t necessarily have many generations of family living here and I believe this is why Ashford Rugby Club performs such a valuable service for people young and old, providing a real community outlet. Our annual fireworks display attracts 4000 and the summer ball should see 260 in attendance this season. As well as being a sponsor, I also like to help out with the club’s sponsorship and we have some excellent sponsors who contribute towards the club’s finance which helps greatly with reducing costs for our younger members. This season’s teams have been excellent with more young people coming through with lots of improvements on the playing side noticeable in our lineouts and our forwards winning ball for our backs to score some excellent tries, next season we have ambitions to include a 4th and development squad. Ashford are a totally amateur setup; we don’t have a separate room for members but open our doors to anyone who would like to come and join us and mix in! We are a well organised, well run club on and off the field and I would like to recognise the great efforts from all my friends at Ashford Rugby Club and am very much looking forward to the challenge of London 3 for next season!”
