Therefore, we invested in a new strength gym to bridge this gap. It is now complete and we have had a steady flow of youth using it. We also welcome the under 18s to take part in certain elements of the senior training to ease them into it. “I would say we are a community club. We try and help out where we can. For example, we go out with the Santa sleigh at Christmas time and collect money for the Christmas lights. We hold different events and donate the money to charities in the community. We hold a Rugby and Ale Festival every year and it brings in footfall of over 1000 people. “The biggest challenge the club will face in the next five years is the same as we have always had, keeping players and bringing new faces in to the squad to compete at the level we are currently at. Also, we need to ensure we have enough coaches at youth level to allow as many different age groups to play rugby and filter through to the seniors. “There’s not a definite five year plan in place just now but we are at the stage where we need to look at the possibilities of building a new clubhouse or extending the current one. We are restricted on what events we can hold in the clubhouse by the size and shape of the area. Extending or rebuilding would give us the ability to hold bigger events to keep the club funds topped up each year to help the day to day running.” WWW.ROBERTSON-BLACK.CO.UK Callum Gordon has had a long and positive association with Blairgowrie RFC. He told us, “I was in the Royal Air Force from the age of 17 to 21 where I played some rugby and about a week after I got out, and not long after the club formed, I played in a 7-a-side game for the club. The rest is history as they say and although I have played in the centre and stand-off positions over the years my main and probably most enjoyable position is scrum half. At age 58 I still turn out for the over 35s and take part in the Ale festival matches each year. I have helped out a little with the senior coaching last season and it’s great to see the boys compete so well, obviously our playing numbers are key to our continued development but I’m sure on the back of this impressive season we can hold our own in the higher division next season.” 78 Issue 86
