Much credit goes to the drive, humour and leadership of
our captain Giles Sacarello, who wore the 2/4/6 shirts as and
when necessary and, along with James Henwood, ensured
that regular training sessions took place in Battersea Park
throughout the year. Guy Schwikkard, new to the club this
season, controlled the game from fly half – harvesting 117
points from 8 tries, 34 conversions and 3 penalties, and richly
deserving his “Player of the Season” award. Top try scorer
with 10 touchdowns was our talented and versatile flanker
Angus Bonner, who was happy at scrum half or openside, or
being lifted to great effect in the line-out.
With the team suffering from chronic front row shortages
this season, key players manned up to cover these positions
– most notably Dom Robinson, Curtis Widmer and James
Henwood who all deserve recognition. So our biggest challenge
in the coming season is to fill the front row with specialist props
to allow these players to play in their natural positions. Tom
Cruz had the most appearances, often at hooker, but also at 6
and 9 showing great flexibility and commitment to our league
ambitions. Likewise, Christian Killoughery shifted from 9 to
10 as required, slotting penalties at crucial times in important
games.
Our supply of players from Worth School remains
important to the ethos of the Club and this season has been
successful with a keen group of recent school Leavers giving
the team balance and bringing on these younger players for
the future. Socially, we’ve done well too – often staying on to
share our opponents’ hospitality and to offer our own – and we
have enjoyed some memorable Saturdays in the Roundhouse
in Clapham.
It’s fair to say that the spirit of the club is extremely high
with a real buzz as we look forward to an exciting season in
Surrey 2. Our number one priority is to hit the season running
for a change – as we tend to have slow starts most seasons,
affected by the inevitable stag weekends and weddings in
September.
Our previous ventures into this league have shown us that
the key difference in this league is not the higher standard but
the greater consistency of other clubs in Surrey 2. For us to
succeed next season we need to have a group of 25-30 players
committed to playing most Saturdays of the League season.
For 2019-20 we’d like to cement our place in Surrey 2 and get
on with building the squad that is capable of getting us up to
Surrey 1.
