Penygroes Champions. The club was buzzing. It shows how important rugby is not just for Penygroes but for every community.” 2019 “The plans are to build the team stronger; I hope our success in 2018/19 season will encourage more people and players to get involved. It would be great to get a youth up and running and women’s teams. Penygroes is a typical village community, not much goes unnoticed. The club is integral part of the community which brings people together.” Youth “Youth is simply the lifeline for the senior team, unfortunately youth rugby is scarce. Junior rugby I believe is a factor of massive drop off in participation from 16 to 18- year olds. Players have played 10+ years of rugby before they even reach adulthood. Too much of something simply makes you want a change. We don’t have a youth, it is something we would like, however clubs need to collaborate to ensure there is access to rugby in our areas.” Challenges “Our biggest challenge will not be so much the club but our sport; I think we need to broaden our mind sets to protect rugby participation. Clubs need to collaborate to ensure that there will always be access to rugby in the community.” Ambitions “Rugby is an experience I would not change for the world, my ambition is simply to ensure that the next generation’s will have the opportunities to experience what we did as young players. Rugby not only enhances sporting skills it enhances social skills as well. If we can ensure a rugby team in Penygroes for the foreseeable future, then it wouldn’t be a bad place to live.” “I am a club sponsor and father of two first team players at Penygroes. My lads, Josh and Christopher both play for the 1st XV and are part of the Championship winning team. Josh is team captain and plays back row and Christopher plays outside half or centre. Both boys played junior rugby for the club and it would be great to see the revival of this moving forward. My business, Tony Powell Transport are club sponsors and they have supported the club for many years. Best wishes to everyone for the 2019/2020 campaign.” Tony Powell www.rugbyclubmag.com 35
