Dennis Lewis is the current chairman of Hirwaun RFC. He
has had along and positive association with the club and
recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “I started playing for
the club as a 15-year-old and like many of our players
over the years came from a local estate. As well as being
a great rugby club Hirwaun RFC has certainly helped many
young people out of what might have been other negative
distractions. On one occasion when we were struggling for
players my daughters husband Dr. Jack Jones offered to
play, which was great and although Jack isn’t your typical
rugby player and a real gentleman we were grateful to have
him. He was quite shocked however when he passed one of
the players smoking outside the changing rooms before the
game and, on entering, one of the other players pulling his
socks up to cover his ankle tag.
My own playing career took me as far afield as Dubai and
Saudi Arabia playing for the club on my return and although
I started off as a sprightly centre I progressed towards the
back and 2nd row to eventually tight head prop when I hung
my boots up at age 54. Andrew Ofamah, one of our current
players is a great example to the older player still playing
front row rugby for us in his 50s.
This year the team have really gelled and matured and I
think you will see a more confident side in next years higher
league. My business Dividers MW are also club sponsors
and we are always delighted to support Hirwaun Rugby
Club. Everyone at the club should be very proud of this
fantastic season which is now etched firmly in the club
history books - best wishes to everyone on many more
seasons to come!”
