With the brand of rugby we’re playing that is important and should pose club’s in the league above some problems. “Next season we’ll be looking to consolidate our position in the league as we have a good squad of players now. We’re also hoping to be able to produce a second team and aren’t too far away; it may be that most of the games will be midweek so that there can be a bit of an overlap. We’re hoping to bring some more players in to allow us to continue to develop. “We’ve also started a rugby league mini section for the summer and have had good numbers so that is really positive. Some of our first team are helping out with the coaching and that is hopefully a first step towards establishing ourselves at mini and junior level. We need to have a youth section in place so that they can eventually go on to represent the team at first team level. 22 Issue 86 “One of our biggest challenges is raising funding to support the club. Our President Phil Thomas backs us and has done for many years and is a vital part of the club; a real stalwart and cult hero. We have a really good committee but would like to add some more young blood on that side. We’ve people here that work very hard and they make Hirwaun the club that it is and keep us moving forward. We recently held our club dinner and were able to recognise all of that which is very important. “In the next five years I’d like to see us climb up to Division Two. I think that that would be a level that we could sustain if we continue to do things right. It is also crucial that we get a youth section up and running if the club is going to continue to be successful. There is a lot of competition for players in the area so we will continue to work hard to make sure that they are well looked after so that they stay with us.”
