Hirwaun Hirwaun RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB Hirwaun RFC has enjoyed a terrific season this time around and is now building for the 2019/20 season. Rugby Club Magazine recently caught up with Club Representative Huw Morris to find out more. Hugh told us, “I played for the club for thirteen years and have been coaching for the last three. We’ve been successful recently, playing a good brand of rugby and were delighted with how the season has gone. We’ve worked very hard to develop our style of play; we went up two years ago and came straight back down. We have always been renowned for having a big pack and now we’ve started to play a more open brand of rugby which is I think the route we need to take if we are to establish ourselves in the league above.” “We’ve brought in some good players this season which has helped to add a little bit of class to the side. The Phil Thomas has had a long and positive association with Hirwaun Rugby Club and is their current president, a position he has held for well over ten years. He told us, “I started playing for the club’s youth in 1967 which I captained and was also fortunate enough to get a Welsh trial, advancing to senior rugby at the age of 19 I then moved to Tredegar for 10 seasons, captaining them on occasion. My main position being blind side flanker. I latterly returned to Hirwaun to coach and had the privilege of being part of some great Hirwaun sides and players who won three promotions and competed in many local and regional cup finals. This year’s squad have had a really solid performance, galvanised by a great team unity which I feel will be key to their continued success. In my experience it’s about the whole team coming together and playing for each other and Hirwaun demonstrated that this season with some great performances. Being Club President I also like to support the club with some sponsorship through my businesses The Lamb Inn and PT Civil Engineering. Next season will no doubt offer more challenges but if the lads stick together and support each other as one unit I’m confident Hirwaun Rugby Club will enjoy another successful season!” www.rugbyclubmag.com 21
