Nantgaredig “My family live locally and although I never played for Nantgaredig I played against them for another local side mainly in the position of No.8. More recently my son Gethin, who went to the local school, has been the winger for the 1st XV. This season’s performances have been outstanding and a real pleasure to watch. Nantgaredig Rugby Club have always commanded a lot of respect from other clubs because of their strong family friendly and welcoming approach. They are fortunate to have so many great people down their including an excellent coaching team with Derek and Thomas and Stuart Phillips who is sadly moving on but with everyone’s best wishes. My business Copefield Construction have sponsored the club for the past five years and we like to help out in any way we can. Next season will naturally be a tougher challenge but with such a good bunch of lads including young and old heads combined with such a great support throughout the club it’s going to be an enjoyable season!” Orwel Davies John George Phillips has had along and positive connection with the rugby club having played in the second and back rows for a few seasons while both his sons Oscar and Max have pulled on Nantgaredig colours as well when they joined the club’s junior section. John is also a committee member who brings his wider experience to this great family club. He was also the reason that the club played against an international Swedish team winning 46-5 during the Jubilee year. Tom told us, “My mum is Swedish and I lived in Sweden for three years. I was acquainted with Neil Johnstone, technical director at the Swedish Rugby Union and together we agreed the fixture. The result was publicised on Radio 2 and as far afield as ABC news in Australia. Nantgaredig have a great committee and realise the cycle is always about improving and this year having a 2nd team has made a positive difference. It is a great family club and I pass on my best wishes to all for the future.” www.rugbyclubmag.com 15
