We have to maintain and when necessary improve facilities
to ensure that they are the best that we can provide. Also, we
need to ensure that the Club continues to evolve with new
people and former players coming on board to assist with the
running of the Club.”
Ambitions
“Our ambitions are to protect the outstanding team spirit
that exists and on the playing side try to grow numbers
throughout the Club to safeguard the future. On the playing
side we have ambition but it is always ‘do the best you can
with the players we have’. With good coaching we have had
an outstanding season on the playing field and hopefully it’s
the start of further progress up the Leagues.
We are after all a small village side punching above our
weight but it does show that with good people and a great
group of players who play for fun and importantly enjoy each
other’s company, what can be achieved.
Whatever happens we will maintain a strictly amateur
ethos. We will never go down the route of paying players. It
is the cancer in the modern game as many Clubs have found
to their cost. I’d like to finish by saying I am very proud to be
associated with Clwb Rygbi Nantgaredig RFC.”
Hugh Harries has had a long association with Nantgaredig RFC and is current club Chairman.
He recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “I never played rugby until I was 22; I hadn’t played
any sport due to a leg problem with my bone emerging through my skin. My brother Gareth
was asked by his Captain Barry Davies to ask me to play and I did.
I played outside half, kicking with the very same leg I had struggled with as a child and played
for a further twenty plus years to the age of 43 when my knee shattered. My son Jason Harries
is a successful pro player for Cardiff Blues having signed from Edinburgh. The former Wales
Under 18, U20 and Sevens international joined the Scottish side in May 2017 from London
Scottish on a one-year contract. The 6ft 3in former Carmarthen Quins and Scarlets age-grade
player can play at centre or wing.
Nantgaredig is a great amateur club who have come together this year in style; an excellent
senior side with mature heads and a second team have given them depth. Congratulations to
everyone on a great season.”

“I am an ex-player whose
father Ivor was a club
founding member back in the
days when the Young Farmers
got together and started the
club. My son Iwan also played
for the club and although I
said I would play anywhere
myself, my dad and Iwan
were generally all back-row
players.
Nantgaredig is a great club
and there is a great family
connections with a board in
the club dedicated to dads,
sons, bothers, cousins etc.
who all played for the club.
I noticed the 1st XV after
completion of their game
going across to watch the 2nd
XV game which is a great
demonstration of unity and
friendship, something the
club has been renowned for.
They have had a fantastic
unbeaten season with great
contributions from everyone.”
