RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL CLUB

Oldham RUFC are currently looking forward to the 2017 / 18 season after two successive North Lancs Cumbria fourth place finishes which followed promotion to Level 7 two seasons ago . The Club has shown that it has the clear potential to climb further , and has only been short of consistency over the last season in order to achieve this .

The good results over the last two seasons are due to a combination of a number of factors including a great range of talent in the current first team , a highly effective coaching team which joined the Club two seasons ago , great facilities , a very committed team of volunteers running the Club and some really good players in lower teams always competing for first team places .
Oldham ’ s number one aim for 2017 / 18 is to win the NLC league and gain promotion . This aim has been central to pre-season training which started early this year in order to ensure the players reach their best fitness levels for the start of the season , in addition to developing their game further .
The training has been physically demanding , but with the start of the season rapidly approaching the players have shown great tenacity both on the training pitch and in the gym . Rewards are likely to be maximised this season because in addition to playing an excellent standard of rugby , there are only four
Cumbrian teams in the league compared with seven last season , and therefore more games in Lancashire with the shorter travelling distance will contribute to better player availability and consistency . In addition to the first team , Oldham also fields a second and third team which play in the North West Intermediate Rugby Union Leagues . Numbers for these two teams are looking really good for 2017 / 18 , and the main aim for these sides is to play good rugby with consistent sides every weekend . The third team consists mainly of Vets , and the Oldham Vets have established themselves as an important part of the Club ’ s core players in recent years . The Vets also played in the Friday evening Casuals fixtures in 2016 / 17 , a great development in Greater Manchester social rugby which they are hoping will continue in the following seasons .
