Integration
“ Over the past few seasons , we have had a rule that the 4th XV include at least five Colts in the team as a way of introducing the youngsters to senior rugby . This has proved hugely successful with some players advancing on to 3rd , 2nd and even 1st team rugby . It has also helped us overcome one of our biggest challenges , which is bringing junior players back into the club after they ’ ve been away to university or college .”
Community
“ We are absolutely a community club . As well as many of the players , coaches , volunteers and supporters coming from the community , we are lucky to have many local businesses and individuals who step up to sponsor us . We also encourage other organisations to use our facilities : an archery group and Rugby Tots are here once a week , as well as a running club .
Each season , we have an arrangement with other local rugby clubs which means they can come up and play on our pitches when theirs are water-logged . We also provide rugby equipment to local schools to help introduce children to rugby and we have a large fireworks display every year that is open to everyone in the community .”
Challenges
“ On the pitch , the biggest challenge is always to maintain the standard of rugby we play by attracting and retaining players . Since rugby went professional , good players are sometimes lost to teams in higher leagues who can afford to pay them .
We can ’ t compete on that score , but we do have some fantastic coaches and facilities and all the players are well looked after so hopefully this will attract and keep talent in the club . Off the pitch , the challenges are always ensuring we have plenty of sponsors and that we improve and maintain the facilities at the club .”
Ambitions
“ We want to work towards being promoted again and maintaining a position in National 3 . We also look forward to developing more home grown players to play first team rugby while continuing to run four successful teams each season and integrate further the Juniors into Senior Rugby . We ’ re also planning to take on a couple of key infrastructure projects , such as building a new gym as well as revamping the interior of the clubhouse .”
