Mowden Park come into the 2017/18 National One season on the back of a mid-table
finish last year. A string of injuries before Christmas hit the North-East side hard before
a late season resurgence saw them climb up towards the top half of the table.
Danny Brown has since bolstered
his team both on and off the field. Mark
Luffman comes to the club as forwards
coach, joining Brown and Head Coach
John Newton. On the field, DMP have
recruited well, adding forwards Alfie
Barron (Hartpury College), Dan Preston-
Routledge (Yorkshire Carnegie) and
Jake Brady (Harrogate). In the backs,
Mowden have brought back Warren
Seals (Yorkshire Carnegie) and Chris
McTurk (Barnard Castle) as well as new
scrum half, Matt Dudman (Rotherham
Titans).
The DMP side will be hoping
their new recruits can hit the ground
running in their season opener at home
to Loughbrough on Saturday 2nd
September. This will be the first game in
18 Issue 74
an ever competitive National One
season, which carries added
opportunity given the
folding of London
Welsh.
The
result
has
been
the
promotion of last
year’s unbeaten
side Hartpury
College,
who
will play their
rugby
in
the
Championship
this year. Filling
the National One
void will be three sides
from the leagues below.
Caldy, Bishop’s Stortford and
Old Elthamians have all joined the
National One ranks for the
coming season, in what
promises to be an
intriguing campaign.
Mowden
Park
will be hoping
to kick on from
last
season’s
campaign
and
benefit
from
the most stable
squad
they’ve
had since their
promotion to Nat 1
three ye ars ago.
