Penygraig FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG all want to play for Penygraig. We also encourage the local schools to use our facilities for inter-schools and combined schools fixtures. So from senior to school age rugby we have all age groups included. We can host all of these things because we own our own ground and changing rooms with an added on site gym. I would definitely say we are a community club.” Challenges “I would say that our biggest challenges are meeting the unknown, such as extra expenditure i.e. insurance which is increasing every year and all other overheads as well as maintaining our coaches and players at both senior and youth levels. We also want to maintain our quality sponsors, to whom we are very grateful.” Ambitions “The club, after some tough years, appears to be turning the corner and hopefully now, we have a clear vision for the future with realistic aims and objectives. First and foremost we must create more home grown talent who have a genuine appetite to play for their village club and not be to ready to jump ship for the so called ‘pot of gold’. If we can keep developing at the rate we are at the moment I would like to believe that Penygraig can be challenging for first division status. This has to be built on a sound coaching and management structure throughout the club so that, when we get there, we can hold our own at that level and make a real impact for the community to be proud of.” A&B Carpentry & Construction provide carpentry, building, plastering, joinery and roofing among other construction services to the Rhondda Valleys and South Wales area. My son Sam plays with the current 1st team and is a 2nd row forward. His cousin, Tom Dunning, who is also 20, plays for the team too as a flanker. Tom’s dad Paul is an ex-player who played for the club for several years in the early 2000’s and his dad Doug Dunning is an ex-chairman of the club.” “I have been a club sponsor now for six or seven years and try and get down there as often as I can. Sam and Tom are Penygraig through and through and with the additional players the club have attracted I’m sure the team will do well next season in the higher division. “Best wishes to everyone at the club for the future and congratulations in your 140th year!” 90 Issue 73
