I
t has been quite a season for Deri RFC this time as they claimed a league
title as a reward for all of the hard work that has gone into the club.
Rugby Club Magazine recently caught up with their Hon. Secretary Graham
Mayo to find out more about the club.
He told us, “I have been involved with the club since I
started playing youth rugby some 32 years ago. There are other
people who have been there a lot longer and started playing for
Deri minis who I believe were one of the first mini rugby clubs
in Wales.”
“The most challenging aspect was approximately three
years ago when we lost a few players to local teams who
started paying. This had a devastating effect not only on the
playing side but on the social side of the club. We struggled to
raise a side to complete our league games, during this period
sometimes going away with 13 players.
“I even came out of retirement along with a few older ex-
players (I’m 48!) to keep the side going; it was a momentous
achievement to fulfil our league fixtures that season. Off the
field the club wasn’t doing too well financially due to us not
