Newcastle Emlyn FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG Kevin Thomas is as an ex player, committee member and is the outgoing chairman at Newcastle Emlyn RFC. He has been in the role as chairman for three of the most successful years in the clubs forty year history. He recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “I don’t want to say too much as I have stepped down as chairman this season but I am John Jones is the current Vice Chairman of Newcastle Emlyn RFC as well as being a long term sponsor with his business John Jones Commercial Motors. He recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine, telling us, “I went to the secondary school in Newcastle Emlyn and would meet up with my friends on a Saturday night after the matches.” “Later on my two sons stared playing junior rugby at the club; Carwyn started in the U9s and continued up until he was 16 when he moved to Hartpury College and will now move on to Cardiff Met later this year to start his training to become a sports teacher. At Hartpury he started in their 5th team as a scrum half but the coaches identified him as an outside half and a good planner which then propelled him into the 2nd team. “Gruffydd played for the under 14s last season in their front row and is unusual in that he has very good ball handling skills which he gained from starting previously as a scrum half. Last but not least my daughter Sioned who only started playing last season has enjoyed an amazing amount of success having been chosen to play for the Scarlets U18s and was part of the winning European side who competed in Holland last season. Sioned plays scrum half and has been described as a female Mike Phillips, she will also be heading towards Hartpury. “After becoming more associated with the club a customer of mine, Kevin Thomas, asked if I would like to sponsor the club which I was happy to do. Kevin then asked if I would like to come on to the committee. The rest is history as they say and this year I am in the position of Vice Chairman. “I feel it is important for the club not to let things slip both on and off the pitch and I would encourage the players to continue to improve and for the rest of us to keep an eye on maintaining the club commercially. Newcastle Emlyn is a great club and has been pinpointed by the WRU as an example to others.
