Tyldesley chequered from the signing of John Buff Berry from Kendal in 1891 who went on to represent England while at Tyldesley to playing in front of 15,000 spectators against Widnes in a Lancashire Cup victory in 1895. However, later that year they became part of the Northern Union breakaway, thus becoming a founder member of what is now Rugby League. Subsequently, the cost of professionalism was cited as the reason for returning to Rugby Union in the early 20th century. More recent history has Tyldesley as the first senior club of a certain Brian Ashton and in 2001 they relocated from their long-standing home ground of Well St to a purpose- built facility at St Georges Park a couple of hundred metres away. In 2009 they had their most successful season to date, winning the North Lancs Cumbria League and reaching a Twickenham final, losing narrowly to Collumpton.
