Rugby Club Magazine recently caught up with their Chairman, Steve Hayes to find out more about the good work that the club has been doing lately. He told us, “I came to Tring RFC in 2002 when my son was eight; the Mini and Junior set up was excellent, our family was made very welcome, we met some lifelong friends as did our son George who now plays for the first XV. I become involved as a Trustee in 2015 and put myself forward as Chairman in July 2016.” “There are many challenges to the role of Chairman; leading a large group of volunteers is difficult, people freely give up their time for the good of the club but many have fulltime jobs and family commitments, they are not employees 22 Issue 72 and cannot be treated as such. Others do not always understand or appreciate the huge amount of work that is required throughout the year. “We are aiming to become ‘one club’ from the Cubs, Minis & Juniors through to the Academy, Seniors, supporters old guard; it is a huge challenge to get everyone onside and pulling in the same direction. The best reward for me is when members can see the progression. “Tring is a club in change, the vast majority of members enjoy the club, it is important that we bring everyone along on the journey to become the best run amateur club in Herts. The senior squad has had some brilliant success in promotion and we have strong 2nd’s and 3rd’s with the M&J section of over 450 children going from strength to strength. “Tring has had a highly successful season in every aspect. Change is always difficult, communication has improved greatly but we must not rest on our laurels, there is a great deal to improve. Involving all members has been a major success, not everyone likes change but it is important that members are involved in the process, it takes time.
