ighfield RFC enjoyed a strong
campaign in 2016/17 and are already
planning to push on next season. Rugby
Club Magazine recently caught up with this
season’s President Fergus O’Mahoney to find
out more about the club.
He told us, “I’ve been involved for years at the club, carrying out a
number of different roles. I’ve been President this year; it’s been an easy
job because the team has been very successful.”
“There’s a great atmosphere at the club at the moment; we’re
fielding four men’s sides and a ladies team at senior level. We also have
a very strong underage section and there’s a very good rugby culture
in Highfield at the moment. That’s very important for us; it’s our
job to create the atmosphere for good enjoyable rugby because it is a
participation sport.
“We’ve grown organically over a number of years. We were demoted
to junior rugby in 2001 but got straight back up. There have been a
number of blips on the way but certainly in the last six years we’ve
progressed well and have had a good season this year. Getting a playoff
place is a huge achievement just after getting promoted and we want to
push on from there now.
“The players and the coaches here are very ambitious which is very
important. It is also important that the club stands behind them and

having a really good season. Unfortunately,
I don’t get down to see many games due to
