Amman United Simon Pugh of Club Sponsor CW Pugh & Sons Plant Hire recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “Our business is very local to the club but unfortunately work commitments don’t allow us to attend many matches. It’s great that the club are having such a great season. Myself and Wyn are very proud to be associated with the club and wish everyone at Amman United RFC the very best of continued success!” Thankfully, our youth rugby has been coordinated by another club stalwart, John Vince Williams who has been at the helm since the 1980’s. ‘JV’ also won the ‘SWALEC Unsung Hero Award’ for his efforts at our club in 2016.” Juniors “As well as youth rugby, we also have a junior section which is thriving. Again, we’ve had another club stalwart and bona-fide legend of the Amman United Martin ‘Luther’ Jones being heavily involved. One of our junior players, Harvey Duncan, was recently selected as the British & Irish Lions mascot and was present during the squad announcement on the 19th April. Harvey has featured prominently on Sky Sports and on B&IL social media interviewing Captain Sam Warburton and Warren Gatland. An outstanding advert and ambassador for the club at just nine years old.” Transition “We have, for a number of seasons, held combined training sessions for our youth and senior squads. This has proved hugely beneficial for our very successful youth side and as already mentioned a number of times above, for our senior side. By training together, the younger players are familiar with the senior players, and are familiar with the senior style of play. Therefore, the integration is seamless. On occasion, where there has not been a fixture for the youth side, and if there is a shortage for the 1st XV as a result of injury etc. bringing eligible youth players into the senior squad has given them very good experience and those who have played have excelled. This has created a ‘one club’ mentality in which every player, regardless of age or ability, feels very much part of and at home in.” Andrew Lacey of principal club sponsor Star Multifuels recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about his long association with Amman United Rugby Club, saying, “I started playing my rugby with Amman as an Under 16 player and continued on for another 18 years. With my business being massively seasonal throughout winter and having to travel distances a lot it has not always been easy to commit to playing for the club. That however doesn’t diminish my love and respect for The Amman. There is no club like it and I always feel that I am amongst my friends. This was very much the case at the Bowl Final when I sat in the stand and watched 20 of my friends win what was a great match. My brother in law, Shane Williams, is also a director in Star Multifuels and he told me with confidence early in the season that the Amman were going to win their league undefeated and lift the bowl at the Millennium Stadium – he was right! I would like to congratulate everyone at the club on another great season and hope that they all enjoy their success, then go out their next season and do the same again!” www.rugbyclubmag.com 75
