Michael Gavigan of club sponsor The Central Bar & Restaurant in Navan
recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about his positive association
with Navan Rugby Club, saying, “I come from Kells which is 10 miles from
Navan, Co. Meath. Five or six of my friends decided to go along to Navan
Rugby club and as a young lad I joined them, starting my playing career as
a full back or winger with the clubs under 10’s.”
“We played on a dream team captained by Collie
Farrell under master coach Dick Brady and won
Leinster Titles at 11s & 13s. This team had players
such as David Beggy & Peter Brady who played
for the Leinster and Connaught Senior teams
respectively as adults. Navan is one of those clubs
that attracts players from all over the county and has
a real sense of being a family and community based
club where all are welcome.
“NRFC is blessed with so many home grown
coaches who formerly played with the club and
this has led to under age success over the years
culminating in winning the Premier National U20
competition this year ... most of this cup winning
side were previously coached by our former players
Collie Farrell and Billy Faulkner as young teenagers.”
Michael played underage till U13 and played
away at school and in Dublin for a decade before
returning in 1990. “I was very fortunate to make a
great team in the 90s.” Michael played on the Navan
team that lifted the Towns Cup beating Co Carlow
14-13 in 1990 and in 1991 Navan picked up the
cup again beating Athy 34-15. The coaches at the
time were the brilliant and very clever Dick & Paul
Brady and NRFC were led by fantastic captains
John McLarney in 1990 and Peter Brady in 1991.
