Navan Stephen Beggy and his family have had a very long and positive association with Navan Rugby Club. He recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “My father and brothers have been part of this great club and played with many of their winning teams since the early 70s. Myself, my dad Gerald, brothers David and Gerry all played either on the wing or as full back for Navan with Paul, who played for Navan for 17 years, was an outside half and expert kicker who rarely missed and was considered to have one of the best boots in Ireland. Martin was the only forward among us who played number 8 for the club. My mum Rita Beggy, who sadly passed away just over a year ago, was also a big part of the club sitting on many of the women’s committees. I spent some time in Australia across a ten year period, playing for Manly in Sydney. This came about through the encouragement and friendships with Chris Humphries, John Mulvihill and Jim Hartnett. Beggy’s Bar has sponsored the club for many years now and we like to help out as much as we can; Navan RFC has given a lot of enjoyment to our family. For such a young coach Alan Kingsley has performed a great job with the boys at Navan and there is absolutely no reason why the club can’t continue to progress through the leagues, best wishes to everyone at the club from all the Beggy’s, keep up the good work!” getting the little things right and making sure everyone is proud to be a part of the club and wants to progress. It is very much a one club mentality here with all of our teams pulling together.” 2017 “I’m going to take a break for a few weeks and then recruitment will start with a view to preseason beginning at the start of July. As much as it’s a quiet time of the year, as Director of Rugby there is a lot of work that needs to be done. 33 Issue 71 Traditional Irish pub located in the heart of the Boyne Valley Opening hours : Mon to Thurs 5:30 Fri 5pm and Sat & Sun Tel: 0868074560 Beggy's Bar Bridge St, Navan Co Meath. We need to make sure that we don’t rest on our laurels; the club needs to push on in the right direction and prove that we can compete in the league above. Teams have normally done quite well when they make the step up from this league and we’re looking to continue that trend.” Community “The club plays a massive role in the community here. The club is very tightly knit together and everybody involved is always happy to chip in. www.rugbyclubmag.com 33
