RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
Burbage RFC was founded in 1981 and played friendlies and merit
league rugby. The club was booming in the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s, but
recently fell upon hard times. Sitting in the Leicestershire Merit B
league, Burbage struggled for players and had nine or ten players
turning out every week, which had a massive impact on the club.
The players never got themselves down and
the club has since had a massive turnaround.
Long standing members such as Tommy
Childs and Ian Atkinson drove the club
forward, with a massive influence
also coming from incoming Andy
Cheshire. Cheshire took on the role of
fixture secretary and had a massive
influence on attracting players to
the club. In the 2015/2016 season,
Burbage finished as runners up in
the Leicestershire Merit B league and
won the prestigious Leicestershire
Presidents Cup, under the captaincy of
Tommy Childs.
Things didn’t stop there though, in
the 2016/2017 season, with another massive
influx of players, Burbage decided it was time
to enter the Midlands league structure for the first
time and also starting a second team, entering them
into the nearby Warwickshire Merit 3 League. With the first
team captained by Adam Jardine, the second
team (Burbage Titans) captained by Ian
Atkinson and the club captaincy going to
Andy Cheshire, things started to move
forward again.
The trio worked very hard
together and have recruited a
number of players, with the help
of the existing Burbage players,
also recruiting an excellent coach
in Jimmy Samuel, who has been
influential in the success in the
2016/2017 season.
