Black Only Colleges in the United States

There are not “Black Only” colleges in the United States but Historically Black Colleges, which are institutions of higher education that were established before the Civil Rights Act in 1964 with the intention of primarily serving the African American Community.

An example of this is Lane College, which is located in Jackson, Tennessee, is a small, private, co-educational, church-related institution that provides a liberal arts curriculum leading to baccalaureate degrees in the Arts and Sciences. The percentage of black students in this school is 100%, nonetheless, the College admits persons regardless of color, sex, religion or national origin.

The College was founded in 1882 by individuals who were committed to assuring that newly freed slaves would be able to "read, write, and speak correctly”. Lane College played a significant role in reducing the rate of illiteracy among blacks in the South in fewer than fifty years.
