Belgian leg of the Grand Prix between 1970
and 1982. Gilles Villeneuve’s tragic accident
in Zolder in 1982 highlighted the need for a
safer Belgian track, and lead to the complete
modification of Spa-Francorchamps to it’s
current 7km length, including the removal
of the famous “S” at Masta and the long
descent of Burnenville.
This new configuration also gave birth to
new corners that integrated perfectly in
keeping with the character of the old circuit
and the region itself. These new mythical
turns such as “Brussels” and “Pouhon”
are even now known as renowned parts of
the current circuit. Spa has now been the
permanent home of the Belgian Grand Prix
since 1985.
In the 2000s, FIA safety standards were
again increased to further reduce the risk of
incidents. For the manufacturers this meant:
increasing of the minimum weight of the
car; HANS devices for the driver; increased
safety zones; introduction of the virtual
safety car and the Halo system to name a
few.
Circuits operators were also required to
make changes to meet these new safety
standards. In 2007, the Spa layout was
changed to include the “Bus Stop” - much
to the dismay of the drivers - and the run-off
zones in faster turns were extended as much
as possible.
Even with the higher safety presence, Spa-
Francorchamps definitely remains one of the
most spectacular and most exciting circuits
in the world for all drivers!

entfernen, die als zu gefährlich galten.
Circuits Zolder und Nivelles waren
daraufhin Gastgeber der belgischen Ausgabe
des Grand Prix zwischen 1970 und 1982.
Gilles Villeneuves tragischer Unfall in Zolder
im Jahr 1982 unterstrich die Notwendigkeit
einer sichereren belgischen Strecke und
führte zur kompletten Umgestaltung von
Spa-Francorchamps auf seine aktuelle Länge
von 7 km, einschließlich der Entfernung des
berühmten „S“ bei Masta und der langen
Abfahrt von Burnenville.
Diese neue Konfiguration brachte auch
neue Kurven hervor, die sich perfekt in
den Charakter der alten Rennstrecke und
der Region integrierten. Diese neuen
mythischen Wendungen wie „Brüssel“ und
„Pouhon“ sind noch heute als Teile der
aktuellen Rennstrecke bekannt. Seit 1985 ist
Spa fester Bestandteil des belgischen Grand
Prix.
In den 2000er Jahren wurden die
Sicherheitsstandards der FIA erneut erhöht,
um das Risiko von Unfällen weiter zu
reduzieren. Für die Hersteller bedeutete dies:
Erhöhung des Mindestgewichts des Autos;
HANS-Geräte für den Fahrer; erweiterte
Auslaufzonen; Einführung des virtuellen
Safety Cars und des Halo-Systems, um nur
einige zu nennen.
Betreiber von Rennstrecken mussten
ebenfalls Änderungen vornehmen, um diese
neuen Sicherheitsstandards zu erfüllen. Im
Jahr 2007 wurde das Spa-Layout geändert,
um die „Bushaltestelle“ zu entfernen - sehr
zum Missfallen der Fahrer - und die Auslauf-
Zonen in schnellen Kurven wurden so weit
wie möglich erweitert.
Trotz der höheren Sicherheitsstandards zählt
Spa-Francorchamps definitiv noch immer
für alle Fahrer zu einer der spektakulärsten
und aufregendsten Rennstrecken der Welt!
