hired by Wilson Rodeo Co. who supplied
the stock. I caught my first bareback horse
with one loop, and I remember it like it was
yesterday! It was during Interior, SD Fourth
of July Rodeo! I was riding my best horse
Easy, and he was just a four year old.
Dove! The greatest cowboy movie ever
made! It's full of one liners!
RF: List your favorites. Event to
pickup? Food? Thing to do when you
are not picking up at a rodeo? Book?
Inspirational quote? Movie?
Matt: Saddle bronc riding - it's such a
classy event. Steak and potatoes. Relax
at home with wife and dogs and maybe
guide a few elk hunters in the fall. We
also go to my father-in-law's ranch, which
is always exciting. Longmire series.
These books are so good I Can't quit
reading them. Speak less and say more!
Lonesome Dove
Luke: I enjoy picking up all the events but,
bareback riding is my favorite because
there is more at stake. Since the cowboy's
hand is wedged into a riggin', I need to be
on my game! The bareback horses also
seem to run the fastest! My favorite food
is beef, in all forms! Guiding Elk Hunts
in the wilderness of Wyoming! I also
enjoying raising Quarter Horses and cow
dogs. My favorite book is The Big Sky by
A.B. Guthrie. Proverbs 21:31 The horse is
made ready for the day of battle but the
victory belongs to the Lord. Lonesome
RF: Who is your hero?
Matt: Paul Peterson - he is a great guy.
He has helped me out so much. Without
him I probably wouldn't be picking up
anymore.
Luke: My father is my hero because he
never gave up on anything and he always
believed in me.
RF: Describe yourself in one word.
Matt: Quiet
Luke: Relentless
RF: What/Who is your motivation to be
a better man and pickup man in and
outside of the arena?
Matt: My wife - she always pushes me
to be the best I can be.
Luke: My motivation to become a
better pickup man in the arena is driven
by my desire to be a better cowboy and
improve my horses abilities. Outside
of the arena, I strive daily to be a role
model for my nieces and nephews.
RF: Finally….
Matt: I've had a lot of awesome
friends who've recommended me and
made calls for me when they didn't
have to, and my wife has supported
