Just a few short years later, Americans –including AfricanAmericans- were being sent ten thousand miles away to fight in
Vietnam. The irony of this was that while African-Americans could
serve for their country in war abroad, they couldn’t even go to school
in their own hometowns. In this, they displayed that they were willing
to do whatever they could to transform America. During this time,
Muhammad Ali shined as an outstanding role model that people
could watch in awe. “I don’t see why me and other so-called negroes
go ten thousand miles to drop bombs and bullets on other innocent
brown people who has never bothered us,” he said and declared that
he would refuse to serve in the Vietnam War. With his stand on this
matter, he became the godfather of his generation and inspired not
just a generation of young Americans but also important people like
Martin Luther King, Jr. As a result, Ali was arrested, his boxing license
was suspended, and his title was stripped. He did not fight between
the dates of March 1967 and October 1970—from ages 25 to almost
29—as his case worked its way through the appeal process. According
to his trainer, Angelo Dundee, Muhammad Ali was robbed of the best
years of his life and career because of his beliefs.
Ali evolved from an ambitious, young boxer to a figure of
freedom. When he was banned from boxing, Ali’s bravery for standing
up for his beliefs increased his popularity and he started speaking
for conferences at universities. He is the first athlete who began to
publicly articulate the relationship between sports and politics in a
global context. If he didn’t announce his change of faith or didn’t
oppose going to Vietnam, would Tommy Smith raise his fist in a black
glove –against the protocol– at the Olympics or would Martin Luther
King, Jr. have given the speech of “Beyond Vietnam”? Those were
the years of choice in America. Ali who “floats like a butterfly and
stings like a bee,” didn’t choose to be brave just in the rings, but also in
life. That ambitious young man who fought so hard to own his dream
title left all of his successes behind just to stand by what he believed in.
And the America, which yearn a transformation for a better future,
followed his steps. Even though he is no longer with us, his impressive
life story will continue to inspire millions.

Bu açıklamanın sonucunda Ali tutuklandı, boks lisansı askıya alınıp
unvanı da elinden alındı. Mart 1967 ve Ekim 1970 arasında (25-29
yaşları) davası görülürken boks yapamadı. Antrenörü Angelo Dundee’ye göre inandığı değerlerin arkasında durduğu için Muhammed
Ali’nin hayatının en iyi yılları kendisinden çalınmıştı.
