After the death of Vera Krupp, the diamond was sold
at a Sotheby's New York auction on May 16, 1968. It was
purchased by Richard Burton for $305,000, the highest
price paid for a diamond ring in an auction at that time.
Burton gave the famous ring to his beloved wife, Elizabeth
Taylor, who wore it on all occasions for more than three
decades. Of course, the jewel became closely associated
with Taylor’s identity.
Elizabeth Taylor died in 2011 and the diamond was
auctioned at Christie's on 16 December 2011. It was
bought by a South Korean buyer for $8,818,500 ($265,697
per carat). The sign of love of the most famous couple of
their time, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, the ring
went to its new owner setting a new world auction record
for dollars spent per carat of a colourless diamond.
