The diamond gets its former name from actress Vera Krupp , the previous owner . She was the second wife of Alfried Krupp of the famous Krupp family , the industrial giants of Germany . The family was one of the world ' s principal steel makers and arms manufacturers until the end of World War II . On the night of April 10 , 1959 , while Vera Krupp and her farm foreman were having dinner , three men rang the doorbell and offered to clear her driveway .
