Editor's Note 18 As year one comes to a close, we at Team Underground are grateful for our readers within the Penn State community and beyond. The end of the beginning. When the idea of The Underground was tossed around one February evening in 2015 by a group of eager freshman discontent with the media narrative on campus, no one had a clue of how that same idea would manifest itself as real change. Over 250 articles later, The Underground has grown in size, readership and range of coverage. To celebrate a year of success, RISE the magazine was born. RISE is a colorful display of what the underground strives to be - a space for inspiration, creation and advocacy among students at Penn State. We've called the magazine RISE after American writer Maya Angelou's famous poem Still I Rise, a declaration of triumph over adversity. This poem serves as a reminder of our commitment to social justice and community. The only way to overcome hate, oppression and injustice is if we rise - together, unified and with strength. We hope you enjoy the first edition of RISE. Thank you for giving us a platform to change the narrative at Penn State. You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I’ll rise. ~ Maya Angelou ADRIANA LACY Editor in Chief 23 28 The Underground is an independent, multicultural student-run media site devoted to exposing the untold stories within the Penn State community.
