Th e Richmond Area Arts Council (RAAC) promotes the cultural development of Richmond and Madison County by creating artistic and educational opportunities for residents and visitors of all ages. RAAC’s Fun With the Arts aft er-school arts enrichment program and summer arts camps stimulate children’s creativity and performance skills throughout the year. Th e Madison Singers, RAAC’s adult choir, weekly art classes, and monthly basket classes provides creative outlets and community entertainment. Th e Madison Strings, another RAAC youth program, off ers local opportunities for children to learn violin, cello, or viola. In addition to its arts education programs, RAAC stages over 35 performing arts events each year. Th e Richmond Chamber of Commerce partners with the Arts Council each August to organize the Pops at the Park concert at White Hall State Historic Site and RAAC’s partnership with the Richmond Centre off ers free Friday night concerts May through August. For visual artists, RAAC off ers rotating art exhibits at the Arts Center and Central Bank. RAAC’s partnership with Baptist Health Richmond supports original artwork on display by local artists in patient rooms and common areas. Although RAAC receives a modest amount of public funding, it operates mainly on private contributions from local businesses and citizens, and an army of dedicated volunteers. Th e Arts Council, founded in 1989, is located at 399 W. Water Street in a historic former church with impressive stained-glass windows.
