I did a book signing last night for my book Choose Bliss: The Power and Practice of Joy and Contentment. What I write inside of each book is “Remember Bliss is your birthright. Choose to live it every single day.” Last night someone challenged me on that point. Her belief is that we were born with an instinct to protect ourselves and survive, not to experience bliss.

I actually agree with her to some degree, but not completely. As human beings we were born with many different kinds of instincts. The instinct to survive and the

instinct to love are two of them. We were also born as tiny little bundles of joy, and awe, and bliss. The world was new, and we were given the instinct to experience everything with a sense of wonder. That’s the only way we could have learned all that we needed to learn in order to survive. I call this instinct Bliss. That feeling of joy, wonder, and awe.

We were born with this instinct, but then life taught us to favor other instincts like fear and to protect ourselves. Part of this

protection is to shrink back and hide so no one will hurt us. Certainly we do need to protect ourselves, but in the modern world, the need to protect isn’t the same as it was when we were cavemen. And still we give in to that instinct more than any others, and in the process, we lose our instinct to experience bliss.

We become afraid of being the star in our own lives and settle for being a supporting actress instead. What a sad state of affairs. We give up bliss, to favor fear. We stand backstage rather than being a star. That’s why I am constantly reminding people, bliss is your birthright. Reclaim it. Favor it. Redevelop the habit of being in bliss. Stand strong in it. Be the bright

shiny star in your own life. So let me write one more time: “Remember, bliss is your birthright. Choose to live it every single day.”
