I’m a real estate investor and mentor with an emphasis on investing blissfully. Yesterday I was visiting one of my tenants. She called with an issue and I went to her house the next day. Even though she was far from blissful, we ended up having a great conversation. At the end of our appointment she asked me, "Moneeka, how are you always in a good mood? You knew I was going to complain and you were still in such a good mood when you arrived."

Let me start by saying I'm not always happy, but I am quite blissful very often. Bliss, like anything else becomes a habit. That habit is perpetuated through what I call bliss rituals. These are actions you take to reset your mood so you feel more joyful. For me, some of those rituals include lighting a fragrant candle, listing to fun music, taking a few deep fulfilling breaths, smiling at people as they walk by, taking a long drive in the mountains, or walking my dog by the creek.

But that’s not the complete ritual. While I do any of those activities, I replace the thoughts in my mind, the ones that might be causing me stress, with ones that make me feel happier, calmer, and stronger.

So in this case, I put on some really fun music while I was driving to meet my tenant. Instead of thinking, “Oh god, here we go again. Another complaint from a tenant,” I thought, “I'm really excited to see Jennifer. I know everything will be fine. I always get things worked out well.”

So remember that you have control over how happy you feel. This week, make a list of some of the things you can do to intentionally make yourself feel good. That way whenever you start to feel upset or stressed out, look at the list and do one of those things. If you have a list ready, you don't have to try to remember something when you are in the middle feeling bad. As you do this little activity, whatever it is, change how you're thinking slightly to turn it from negative to neutral, or even positive.

The more you are able to do this, the more consistently blissful you will be. And being blissful will set you up to thrive in all areas of your life!
