The National Road No. 2 crosses Portugal from North to South and is the longest road in the country, starting in Chaves (km 0) and ending at km 738.5 in Faro, passing through eleven districts (Vila Real, Viseu , Coimbra, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Portalegre, Évora, Setúbal, Beja and Faro), eight provinces (Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, Beira Litoral, Beira Baixa, Ribatejo, Alto Alentejo, Baixo Alentejo and Algarve), 4 mountains, 11 rivers and 32 municipalities.

The story of EN2 is present throughout time, with many segments already being the main Roman roads that crossed Lusitania. With the passing of time, the main roads have been improved and linked to each other. By the end of the century XIX, much of what is today the EN2 was already Estrada Real. Due to its characteristics, EN2 is often compared (on a much smaller scale) to Route 40 (Argentina) or Route 66 (U.S.A.).
