Revive - A Quarterly Fly Fishing Journal Fall 2016 | Page 165

Now of course being a Fly Fisherman, Martin wasn’t going to let us leave South Africa without giving us a taste of the fishing opportunities the country has. After the training he invited us to fish in at private game reserve just a few hours north of Grahmstown that a friend of his manages. Luckily we were there on one of the rare weeks that they didn’t have any clients so we got to stay in the lodge for a couple of days. Our minds were blown when we arrived. It was 50 square miles of sheer African beauty. There was also a large lake in this game reserve that hosted magnificent Rainbow Trout. Each day we would take a safari vehicle from the lodge on a rugged drive through great herds of Wildebeest, every kind of Antelope imaginable, rare African birds, and even a Rhino or two. Because the lake is a bit higher in elevation the trout took quite happily to the environment many years ago when they were planted. Now the fish naturally reproduce in a large stream that runs through the reserve. The fishing was incredible. We caught ample fish from the 3-5 pound range and couple even bigger; when you can measure trout by the pound you know it is good! I had no idea that trout like that even existed in South Africa.
