ESTÁ
formado por un conjunto de
palacios, por lo que también se
le llama Reales Alcázares. Des-
de hace mil años ha sido la sede
del poder y residencia real.El
palacio del Rey don Pedro no
quedó terminado hasta el siglo
XIV, aunque posteriormente se
hicieron ampliaciones. A pesar
de los añadidos que ha sufrido,
en su conjunto, sigue siendo
uno de los mejores ejemplos del
arte mudéjar.
T HE ALCÁZAR IS A group
of palaces an so it is sometimes
called Reales Alcázares. For a
thousand years it has been the
centre of power and a royal re-
sidence. The palace of King don
Pedro was not finished until the
14th century, though after-
wards it was enlarged. In spite
of he reforms it went through it
is still one of the best samples
of Mudejar style.
PATIO DE LA MONTERÍA
Tras atravesar la Puerta del
León, el Patio del mismo nom-
bre servía de separación entre la
ciudad y el palacio; a continua-
ción se encuentra el Patio de la
Montería, en uno de cuyos
frentes se alza la fachada prin-
cipal del palacio de Don Pedro
I el Cruel. Levantada en 1364,
sería ampliada en los siglos XVI
y XVII. En el segundo cuerpo
de esta fachada, una leyenda en
caracteres árabes, en alabanza
de Alá, sirve de contrapunto a
la inscripción gótica que re-
cuerda al autor de la obra.
The Patio del León comes af-
ter walking through the Puerta
del León and it was used as a
boundary between the city and
the palace. Next is The Patio de
la Montería. On one side is the
main facade of the palace of
Don Pedro el Cruel. It was built
in 1364 and enlarged in the
16th and 17th centuries. On
the upper part of this facade an
Arabic inscription worshipping
Allah is contrasted with a Go-
thic writing remembering the
author of the building.

adornos vegetales finamente
trabajados y zócalo de azulejos
del siglo XVI, que son de lo más
logrado del arte mudéjar. En
torno a este patio se desarrolla-
ba, según la tradición árabe, la
vida pública y ceremonial.
The main part of the palace is
the Patio de las Doncellas su-
rrounded by lobe shaped ar-
ches. The walls are covered
with fine vegetable motive de-
corations and tiles from the
16th century which belong to
the Mudejar style. According
to Arab tradition this courtyard
held public events and ceremo-
nies.
SALÓN DE
EMBAJADORES
En el arco de acceso al salón,
el lema nazarita “solo Dios es
vencedor” se repite continua-
mente en caracteres árabes. Las
puertas pudieron haber sido la-
bradas por artesanos toledanos.
La decoración de este salón
suntuoso es de tiempos del rey
Don Pedro, excepto la cúpula,
realizada en el siglo XV y res-
taurada con posterioridad. Sor-
prende la serie de retratos de
todos los reyes de Castilla, has-
ta Felipe III, enmarcados en ar-
quitos góticos, con sus escudos
de armas y la fecha de su reina-
do.
The access arch to the room
has an inscription saying “only
God is victorious" repeated se-
veral times in Arabic. The do-
ors could have been made by
Toledo craft workers. The de-
coration of this room is from
the times of king Don Pedro,
except the dome which was
built in the 15th century and
restored afterwards. There are a
series of portraits of all the
kings of Castile until Felipe III
in Gothic style frames, with
their coat of arms and the date
of thier reign.
PATIO DE
LAS MUÑECAS
El Patio de las Muñecas, cen-
tro de la vida íntima, es de una
elegancia exquisita. Las colum-
nas se remontan a la época cali-
fal y proceden sin duda de la ya
por entonces devastada Medina
Zahara cordobesa. Recibe este
nombre debido a las cabecitas
femeninas en los capiteles de
las columnas.
The patio de las Muñecas,
which was a place of intimacy,
is exquisitely elegant. The co-
lumns date back to the caliph
times and without doubt they
came from the devastated pala-
ce of Medina Azahara in Cor-
doba. It gets its name “Muñe-
cas” (dolls) from the female
heads on the top of the co-
lumns.
