Here is a third-grade example in teaching food items which illustrates this procedure. Presentation: Teacher sticks the following flashcards on the blackboard: fairy cakes French fries carrots sandwiches eggs ice cream The teacher points to the food items and says the words. The learners listen and repeat, chorally and individually. Then, the teacher points to the fairy cakes flashcard, says the word, draws a smiley face and writes up on the blackboard: I like fairy cakes. Yummy! rubbing her tummy at the same time. After that, she points to the eggs flashcard, says the word, draws a sad face and writes up on the blackboard I don’t like eggs. Yuk! making the appropriate facial expression The learners listen and repeat, chorally and individually. The teacher introduces the dialogues and elicits responses from the learners to keep them engaged. A: Do you like fairy cakes? B: Yes, I do. Yummy! A: Do you like eggs? B: No, I don’t. Yuk! Practice: The teacher gets the learners to repeat the dialogues in chorus. Then she nominates certain learners to repeat the dialogues individually, and she corrects any mistakes she hears. After that, the teacher asks the learners to stand in a circle. The teacher passes the French fries flashcard to the learner on her left and asks him/her the question Do you like French fries? The learner answers Yes, I do. Yummy! or No, I don’t. Yuk! and passes the flashcard to the child next to him / her in the circle and asks the question in the same way. When the first flashcard is about three learners away from the teacher, the teacher passes the next flashcard to the learner on her left and asks the question Do you like ice cream? The learner answers again Yes, I do. Yummy! or No, I don’t. Yuk! and passes the flashcard to the child next to him / her in the circle and asks the question in the same way. When all the six flashcards (fairy cakes, carrots, eggs, French fries, sandwiches, ice cream) have gone round the circle and back to the teacher, the activity ends. This activity provides learners with multiple opportunities to practise the new vocabulary items.
