Volume 22 • Issue 04 • 2018 document before we circulate it to our members for consensus approval. the week that can be included in the document. Not sure when the absolute dead-line is. I agree with both Rick Last’s and Alf Lategan’s comments, except about Lasolocid, as there are contradictions in the literature about its efficacy for Cryptosporidium. Lasolocid’s toxic and effective levels are also rather close together, and farmers may suffer losses, if administration is not precise. Chlorine dioxide is available from Stericlear and other distributors. Dear colleagues. Following on my note posted on 6 August, I can provide the following information that could be included in the RuVASA consensus document dealing with cryptosporidiosis. I suggest including the following paragraph: MH- 3 Aug 2018 Halocur may be obtained from MSD if a section 21 permit is obtained beforehand. Section 21 permits are only issued by the MCC [Medicines Control Council] if accompanied by a positive laboratory result. GB - 5 Aug 2018 Emphasise the apparent dual role of Crypto and pathogenic strains of Ecoli in most cases? " Cryptecoli? " Important that other causes of neonatal diarrhoea are investigated and ruled out. Back in the 70s we had a national hysteria when anything and everything was blamed on Chlamydiosis, then a new disease. A diagnostic rubbish bin until the situation was clarified. Maybe we need 2 documents, one for farmers and one for vets? Looks to me that the problem will benefit from a scientific statistical survey on the possible factors that may be at work? A list of knowledgeable experts to be consulted should help. The farmer document must emphasise throughout that the farmer must consult the vet and not just “donner” ahead on his own. MvV- 6 Aug 2018 Dear colleagues. I have to inform you of a recent turn of events that will likely influence procurement of Halocur for now. The Directorate of Animal Health has informed the MCC of their concerns about Halocur with respect to its ability to affect Theileria species, and hence the ability to cause a carrier state of these blood pathogens in cattle or buffaloes treated with Halocur. Bovine theileriosis is an important controlled disease and the availability of a medicine that could be used to suppress the clinical signs of Theileriosis is of great concernm. Section 21 applications for Halocur are currently on hold while DAFF is reviewing the situation and consulting with the company trying to get Halocur registered in SA. I may be able to provide more information later in MvV - 14 Aug 2018 The Directorate of Animal Health has informed SAHPRA (the old MCC) of their concerns about Halocur with respect to its ability to affect Theileria species, and hence the ability to cause a carrier state of these blood pathogens in cattle or wildlife treated with Halocur. Bovine theileriosis is an important controlled disease and the availability of a medicine that could be used to suppress the clinical signs of theileriosis is of great concern. The Directorate of Animal Health has decided that Section 21 applications for the importation of Halocur will in future be reviewed by both SAHPRA and the Directorate who will do a risk assessment for each individual application. Applications must conform to the following: 1. A laboratory diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis must be based on necropsy and histopathological confirmation, and the results must be included with the application. 2. The applicants must indicate how they calculated the volume of Halocur stipulated in the application for importation. 3. The volume of Halocur to be imported may only be enough for use over a period of 6 months. 4. Applications must be farm-specific and cannot include more than one farm per application. 5. The prescribed payment must accompany the application.
