Why did you join the ASC ? New friends are always welcome ! I realized that the vast majority of the people I associate with in the Atlanta area are part of the healthcare field like I am , and it ’ s important to be around people from all walks of life for the diversity they bring ! I love my healthcare friends , don ’ t get me wrong , but I also want people in my life who can introduce me to experiences I wouldn ’ t have otherwise known about .
Favorite place in Atlanta ? Piedmont Park . The park itself is gorgeous and hosts so many great events . The restaurants nearby are also some of my favorites .

Catherine Akin

Catherine is a bright and positive 25 year old from Birmingham , AL . She is in her last year of pharmacy school on rotations at Mercer University and is also completing the Advanced Clinical Track program .
Catherine has an unhealthy obsession with brunch and mimosas and enjoys finding new fabulous restaurants around the city . Sapphire ( Saphie ) is her 1-year-old Siamese mix kitten and she is currently testing if you can teach a cat tricks like you can a dog .
Catherine pretends that she can cook but in reality it ’ s just strictly following and memorizing recipes from Pinterest . If she could live on the lake , she would . She loves water sports and being outdoors .
Catherine has a slight geeky side and likes keeping up with advances in science and technology . She plays some video games and has been very impressed by the societal impact that the new Pokemon Go app has had . Her friends have called her a walking encyclopedia of useless knowledge based on how she excels at trivia .
What one event in your childhood had the greatest effect on your life ? My father passed away when I was 16 . He had an enormous impact on my life , and continues to impact me daily . He was an anesthesiologist and ignited my passion for healthcare and helping others . He was driven , kind , and curious , and instilled in me the desire for lifelong learning and the importance of constantly improving yourself . Going through a tragedy like that at that age definitely matured me , strengthened me , and helped me to become very independent and selfsufficient .
What is your favorite book ? I can ’ t think of a favorite , but one book that I read recently that I greatly enjoyed was The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton . The premise of the book involves a satellite coming back from space , crashing on the outskirts of a small town in Arizona , and the entire town dying in an unusual way . The government and a group of scientists come together to determine what happened and study the phenomenon before it spreads across the country .
The University of Alabama is her alma mater , and on Saturdays in the fall you will find her wearing her Crimson Tide jersey with her eyes glued to the game . Roll Tide !
