Physical Abuse The most commonly recognised form of family violence includes: hitting, pushing, choking and slapping. Not all women experience physical abuse. Other forms of family violence can be just as harmful as physical abuse. Sexual Abuse Forcing anyone, including a spouse or partner, to have sex or perform sexual acts against their will. Abusers may say: • • If you love me you will do this for me It’s your duty as my wife/partner Emotional Abuse Controlling a person through threats, humiliation or manipulation. Abusers may: • • • Undermine your ability as a mother Threaten to harm or remove children Use cultural practices like dowry to make demands and create a feeling of shame if they cannot be fulfilled.
