Physical Abuse The most commonly recognised form of family violence includes: hitting, pushing, choking and slapping. Not all women experience physical abuse. Other forms of family violence can be just as harmful as physical abuse. Sexual Abuse Forcing anyone, including a spouse or partner, to have sex or perform sexual acts against their will. Abusers may say: • • If you love me you will do this for me It’s your duty as my wife/partner Emotional Abuse Controlling a person through threats, humiliation or manipulation. Abusers may: • • • Undermine your ability as a mother and carer Threaten to jeopardise your visa status and have you sent back to your home country Use their status as head of the household to control you and prevent relatives and in-laws intervening.
