INCREASING INCLUSIVE AND ACCESSIBLE FITNESS PROVISION

Individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities are typically under-represented in the fitness market , and the level of understanding from operators and staff in terms of accessing this market is low . The UFIT project saw an opportunity to highlight low cost practical solutions to resolve this .
The UFIT project was a consortium of five European partners led by Institute of Technology in Tralee , Ireland . Using best practice and standards already developed in the UK , SkillsActive led the development of a knowledge , skills and competency matrix to allow for the development of a training package .
Technical input in other areas was provided by the remainder of the project team , and the Institute of Technology co-ordinated the writing of the end product .
Following pilot training days across Europe , the project was launched in Marseille to an international audience .
SkillsActive plan to lead on the rollout of this programme in the UK , hosting events for training providers and facility operators to introduce the principles of the programme .
Supported by SkillsActive , the UFIT team have identified and standardised the knowledge , skills and competence required for facilities and their staff to implement processes which will enhance the accessibility of their fitness facilities . It is believed this will increase participation rates in this group to the benefit of both the facilities and the individuals involved .
