BEING THE BOSS WORKOUT Being your own boss in today’s society... Katie Hardwicke from Burlexercise asks: do we ever really stop working? T he way technology has developed over the last 10 years means we have everything at our fingertips rom the mobile alone I can answer emails, transfer money, attend to my social media, make videos, take pictures, monitor my exercise, oh and ma e phone calls and te t On one hand this is fantastic! I can tweet whilst on the train, I can upload pictures to our urle ercise aceboo page whilst in the bath after class have apps that allow me to monitor my exercise, showing exactly what happens during a Burlexercise class; through other apps I can share with the whole world Overall it means I can reach audiences couldn’t before and s uee e in e tra hours of wor 42 www.exerciseregister.org REPs 42 Burlexercise.indd 29 So, what’s the problem with that? As great as it is being able to work in moments where time would have been lost, such as being on a train, we need to be aware that it isn’t becoming so all consuming that we never actually switch off n occasion I have found my partner and me in complete silence at 10pm, the on, both of us starring into our i hones ather than tal to each other during adverts, we’d pick up our phones and start on social media for our businesses this is when alarm bells rang I’d already scheduled posts on the urle ercise aceboo page that day and had tweeted a few hours ago what was gaining by scrawling through my pictures at 10pm, trying desperately to think of something to weet A A So it’s at this point I decided, for my own sanity and for the sake of all my relationships, I have to ensure that during certain parts of the day and evening, work can wait We must not lose out on quality time with our loved ones because the urge and the ease to work is there or our wor to be successful, we should certainly allow ourselves moments of rela ation and downtime ven those of us where the 9-5 just doesn’t exist, we still need to give our minds times of rest Give your mind the chance to recover from the day’s events, ta e the opportunity to re ect, as it’s these moments that help us grow both creatively and emotionally @REPsUK 29 21/04/2016 11:21
