Circulator Pump is a pump designed to circulate a fluid through a closed system. A closed system is
one which runs in a loop, with the pump discharge line eventually returning back to the pump
suction, often without ever being exposed to atmospheric pressure. They are generally considered
centrifugal pumps, although there are also a few types that use positive displacement technology.
Circulator pumps are commonly utilized for circulating water in a hydronic heating or cooling
system. Circulator pumps are basically electrically powered centrifugal pumps that are widely used in
hydronic applications. Circulator pumps are commonly used for heating and air conditioning
purposes in primarily domestic houses, office buildings, airports and hotels. The pumps that are used
in homes are generally small and enclosed in a single housing and usually rated in fractional
horsepower. However, the ones that are used in commercial applications are large in size and rate to
integral horsepower. These pumps are generally separated from the electrical motor housing as is the
case with general industrial pumps.
