As it is done each year, South Africa celebrated its television and film industry in a major way at Sun City in the North West Province, and we bring you some of the winners from the South African Film & Television Awards (SAFTSs) 2017.
Even though followed by the tragic passing of the legendary Joe “Sdumo” Mafela, we saw some great moments at the awards, and some big winners. Many of the TV personalities went into the ceremony as favourites simply because South Africans have very vocal about their support for them. I can point out specific winners who South Africans backed in large numbers, and they are Thembisa Mdoda and Warren Masemola.
For a long time now, Thembisa Mdoda has been seen as the only presenter who can handle the popular South African TV show “Our Perfect Wedding”. Our Perfect Wedding and Thembisa Mdoda have firmly become part of Sunday night television in South Africa, and they make the trending list on social media every Sunday.
Now on to Warren Masemola, who in my view and a million other views of South Africans, not knowing what the rest of the world thinks yet, is the best actor in South Africa. We have seen him thrown in the deep end, where he has played a number of different characters in different productions, and he always nailed each character. His versatility has left many people wondering why he has not been recognised more by the industry.
Now back to the awards, hosted by the talented Thando Thabethe and Katlego Maboe, who both did a wonderful job, with their energy on point, so was the wardrobe for that matter. More than many other awards in the country, the SAFTAs are growing every year in quality and standard, and after 11 years, they are not looking to be going down any time soon.
