MOVEMBER Q&A

How important is it for men to participate in Movember?

Very important. Prostate and testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity are some of the biggest health issues facing men today. In South Africa, there are 23 suicides daily, with over 200 attempts per day. Globally, 510,000 men die from suicide each year. That's one every minute. On average five South African men will die from prostate cancer every day and one in 29 men has a risk of testicular cancer.

Who have you partnered with this year?

Funds raised this year will go towards awareness and education and programmes presented by our health partners the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) and the Prostate Cancer Association of South Africa that meet the global objectives of International Movember Foundation and the Men's Foundation.

Over the past five years, over R 22 million has been raised and invested into programmes managed by the Cancer Association of South Africa. This money has been invested into the National Patient Navigation Programme, Cancer Cohort Care Programme and the on-line patient support initiative. Money has also been earmarked for updating the national cancer registry amongst other research programmes currently in development.
