Focus on Family Safety Forum How to keep families safe was the focus of three keynote speakers at a public forum that saw 180 gather to hear, discuss and network. Master of Ceremonies David Jenkin (Howe Jenkin Family Lawyers & Mediators) facilitated the Focus on Family Safety Forum as the guest speakers presented on their areas of expertise. Professor Amy Holtzworth-Munroe (Indiana University, USA) demonstrated how intimate partner violence (IPV) is under-reported, but when universal screening is systematically used, the disclosure of family violence increases. Dr Troy McEwan (Swinburne University) talked about the increasing mental health complexities evident in family violence and that it cannot solely be categorised as a gendered crime. She highlighted how current definitions of family violence need to include child-parent violence, sibling violence, and violence between other family members. Dr Jamie Lee presented data from Relationships Australia SA’s successful agency-wide implementation of the Family Law DOORS (a universal risk screening tool) with 10,000 clients screened since 2012. Relationships Australia SA has found the screening tool to be ‘necessary, scalable, helpful and respectful’.
